Song Premiere: The Waterboys, "An Appointment with Mr Yeats"
The Waterboys have shared a second new song, “An Appointment with Mr Yeats,” from forthcoming album Good Luck, Seeker. Good Luck, Seeker is due out August 21 via Cooking Vinyl.
The song finds frontman Mike Scott in reflective mood, singing of his encounters with Ireland’s national poet and Nobel-Prize-winner William Butler Yeats.
“I was playing a festival on the west coast of Ireland a few years ago,” Scott explains. “And suddenly I realized that Yeats had lived in a house just up the road, and that he was buried in the churchyard down the road from where I was playing. And I thought it was time for me to pay my respects.”
“I’d never read that much Yeats,” Scott continues. “I probably should have done. I just had a vague idea of him, I knew “The Lake Isle of Innisfree,” “The Second Coming” and “The Wild Swans at Coole” and that was about it. So I started reading him properly, and I started to realize how extraordinary he was, and how much he’d done for the Irish sense of identity. I realized he was a hero of mine, really.”
